VNA FLU & PNEUMONIA PREVENTION PROGRAM

The flu accounts for millions of dollars in sick time and loss of productivity every year and annually, thousands of deaths and hospitalizations are attributed to the flu and pneumonia. The very young, the elderly and those in between with health complications are considered at risk for serious complications spinning off from a simple case of the flu. That is why Visiting Nurse Association of the Florida Keys (VNA) is continuing its mission to provide all of our high-risk population with flu and pneumonia vaccinations.

High-risk individuals are:

  • persons aged 50 and over
  • residents of nursing homes and other chronic care facilities
  • adults and children who have chronic disorders of the pulmonary or cardiovascular systems
  • adults and children who required regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the preceding year because of chronic illnesses or metabolic diseases.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Persons who care for or work with at risk individuals

**VNA will vaccinate children aged 3 and over.  Please note that children under 9 who are getting their first flu shot will need to get two shots one month apart in order to reach optimum immunity.  Children under the age of 3 will need to be vaccinated by a family physician or pediatrician.

Prices for flu and pneumonia vaccine may vary slightly year to year depending on vaccine cost. Medicare Part B members must present their card to avoid out-of-pocket expense. For more information on Flu and Pneumonia vaccination and clinic dates and times, please contact the VNA nearest you.

Vaccination begins in September or October of each year. We can also provide a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse that will administer flu vaccinations at your place of business. This is a tremendous convenience that should encourage employees to protect themselves against the flu.

Prevention is important in avoiding more serious illnesses that can spin off from a simple case of the flu. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mailing

When flu vaccine is available everywhere, why should you worry about getting                 your flu shot from VNA?

VNA is the only non-profit home health agency serving the Florida Keys.  When you make a conscious decision to attend a flu clinic conducted by VNA, you contribute to VNA's  mission to provide top quality home health services to the people of our community regardless of their financial resources.   This immunization program, like all of VNAs special programs, helps ensure that the work done by our home health and hospice departments continue well into the future despite the challenging economic climate. And VNA of the Florida Keys serves only Monroe County with a governing board of directors that reside here on our beautiful island chain.  All of our resources stay right here for the benefit of our community.  That's why each flu, pneumonia, and shingles shot is so important.  We've been here since 1984.  We want to continue to be there for your employees, clients, colleagues, neighbors, friends and family. And, yes, it helps us be there for you too whenever you need us and at any point in the spectrum of life.

So it does matter where you get your flu shot.  It makes all the difference in the world.

SHINGLES VACCINATION PROGRAM

Shingles is a painful skin rash, often with blisters that is also called Herpes Zoster.  Shingles is caused by the Varicella Zoster virus; the same virus that causes Chickenpox.  Only someone who's had chickenpox can get shingles.   Shingles is most commonly seen in people 50 and older and those with weakened immune systems.  The CDC estimates that at least one million people a year get shingles in the United States alone.

Shingles will usually appear on one side of the face of body and will last for 2 to 4 weeks.  The main symptom is severe pain which will sometimes continue even after the rash clears up.  This pain is called post-herpetic neuralgia.

Other symptoms of shingles can include fever, headache, chills and upset stomach.  Although rare, a shingles infection can lead to pneumonia, hearing problems, blindness, brain inflammation or death.

The VNA offers shingles vaccination year-round by appointment.  For more information on the vaccine, restrictions on immunization and price or to make an appointment, call us today at 305-294-8812 or e-mail Kristen Wheeler, Special Programs Manager.

VNAs PERSONAL RESPONSE SYSTEM

Be safe, be independent, be home!

Visiting Nurse Association of the Florida Keys (VNA) has been providing quality home health care services to Monroe County residents for many years. In keeping with our dedication to this community, we have added Personal Response Systems to the long list of services VNA offers.

The VNA Personal Response Systems are designed for anyone who can benefit from being able to signal for help in a medical or non-medical emergency. This would include the elderly, the chronically ill, the recuperating mother, and infant’s caregiver, and the young “latch key” child. This system is a wonderful way to ensure the safety of your family. An easy to push, completely waterproof pendant worn as a necklace or wristband is part of this great system that can signal for help in case of a fall, medical emergency or any safety concern.

Give us a call today and we’ll tell you how this system can give you peace of mind by allowing you or your loved one to call for help 24 hours/day, 365 days/year.

Demonstrations are available to you without obligation or cost. For further information, you may email:
